Postponed First Tri of the Year

Posted by Jeff on March 2, 2009

Well, Sunday was supposed to be my first tri of 2009.  Take A Hike Ike Tri was a small sprint distance race raising funds for Hurricane Ike disaster relief.

I decided not to participate for a few reasons.  First and foremost, it was cold.  The temp this morning was in the high 40’s to low 50’s, and I don’t own a wetsuit.  If you think I am swimming in 60 degree water and getting out to temps in the low 50’s and WIND… you’re just crazy.

Secondly, the week leading up to the tri was terrible.  I had to work late every day, so I had only done one workout, which was a 2000 meter swim workout on Tuesday.    To make matters worse, I had a work shift with the Rodeo (I volunteer with the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo) on Friday and was on my feet for 7 hours in my boots… so on Sunady morning my feet still hurt from Friday night.

So, to sum up, I decided not to participate because I didn’t want to get sick from cold water/weather and I didn’t want to get injured due to lack of training and already sore legs.  Though I hate to back out, I think it was the best choice.

I do pay to participate in these events, but in this case, since all the money went to a good charity, I wasn’t too upset about paying for a tri I didn’t participate in.  I’ll just say I gave to a good cause!
